The Confederation of African Football restored the Africa Cup of Nations to a two-year cycle after executive committee members unanimously approved a major policy reversal.
The governing body abandoned its controversial plan to move the tournament to a four-year interval and replace it with a newly proposed African Nations League.
Officials determined that the proposed Nations League would require several years to generate the substantial financial resources necessary to make African competitions globally competitive and self-supporting.
The decision protects the economic and sporting priorities of the continent and its 54 member associations while accommodating African players who represent clubs outside the continent.

Patrice Motsepe, the president of the Confederation of African Football, confirmed the outcome in an official statement.
"The decision by the Executive Committee to reinstate the organisation of the Afcon every two years aims to advance, protect and promote the interests of African football," said Motsepe.
The tournament schedule continues to present logistical challenges because of ongoing friction with the European club season and the expanded FIFA Club World Cup.
Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda will jointly host the next continental showpiece in 2027.
Subsequent editions are scheduled for 2028, 2031 and 2033.
Organizers left the 2030 calendar blank to avoid a direct scheduling clash with the FIFA World Cup, in accordance with established international practices.

Goal.com reported that the structural U-turn arrived while fallout from the 2025 final dispute remains unresolved by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
"I know it's a long wait for the fans a few months after the final between Senegal and Morocco," said Matthieu Reeb, the director general of the court.
The court confirmed that its binding verdict on the legal dispute will be issued at the end of November 2026.
National associations, players and supporters await the final legal outcome while administrators prepare for the upcoming tournament cycle.
