Zcash developers set January target for quantum-resistant payments after ‘bunker mode’ scare

Zcash developers are planning to implement quantum-resistant, hash-based signatures by January to protect the network against future computing threats. This upgrade aims to secure transparent transactions as part of a broader effort to harden privacy-focused cryptocurrency against potential AI-assisted attacks.

The upgrade to the privacy coin would initially protect transparent transactions, which account for about 70% of issued ZEC, while shielded payments require separate safeguards. Zakura, a program used to run the Zcash network, has also developed a private lookup tool that lets wallets check balances without revealing linked addresses to a server, and an experimental version is available in the Vizor wallet.
