Zahid: Political differences must not undermine national harmony

MELAKA: Mutual respect and wisdom in managing differences must form the foundation of national unity, says Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi ( pic ).

The Deputy Prime Minister said social harmony depended on the willingness of all parties to understand the country’s history and foundations while respecting the rights of every citizen.

"The Federal Constitution provides the foundation for ensuring that the position and rights of every citizen are understood and protected,” he said when opening the national discourse, Unravelling the Malay Peninsula Polemic, at the Melaka International Trade Centre in Ayer Keroh here on Saturday (Sept 26).

Ahmad Zahid said differences of opinion, including in politics, must be managed maturely to preserve the country’s harmony and stability.

“Differences must not prevent us from reaching a consensus on matters concerning religion, race and the nation,” he said.
