Yemi Alade Reveals Her Musical Menu, Names ‘Ala Bekee’ And ‘Coco Na Yam’ As Main Courses

Nigerian singer Yemi Alade has released a new album titled 'It’s Yemi Alade,' which she describes using a culinary metaphor to categorize tracks as starters, main courses, and desserts. The project features a diverse range of musical influences and collaborations with various African artists.
Why it matters
The album highlights the growing global influence of African music and the collaborative nature of the modern Afrobeat and Highlife scenes.
If Yemi Alade’s new album were a restaurant menu, listeners would have plenty of options before getting to the main course.
The singer has offered a playful description of “It’s Yemi Alade” by dividing songs from the project into starters, main dishes and desserts, giving fans a glimpse into some of the tracks she considers central to the listening experience.
Alade selected “Don’t Be Shy,” featuring Kenyan artiste Njarae, and “General Market” as her two starters.
For the main course, she chose “Ala beke,” featuring Don Jazzy, and “Coco Na Yam,” featuring Congolese star Ferre Gola.
The album’s dessert options, according to the singer, are “Alhaja” and the “Earth Song,” featuring Njarae and Sofiya Nzau.
The culinary analogy reflects the wide variety of sounds contained in the project.
