Years of waiting for Ilayangudi aspirants as new multi-purpose library remains closed
A state-funded multi-purpose library in Ilayangudi remains closed two years after construction was completed, frustrating local students and job seekers. Officials cite bureaucratic delays, promising the facility will open within two months to serve the surrounding village panchayats.
Why it matters
The delay underscores common infrastructure management issues that hinder educational access for youth in rural or semi-urban regions.
Over two years after its construction was completed, a state-of-the-art multi-purpose complex and library near the Ilayangudi old bus stand remains locked and inaccessible to the public, severely hampering students and job seekers preparing for competitive examinations.
Initiated under the town panchayat’s own funding scheme for the 2023–2024 fiscal year at an estimated cost of ₹1.15 crore, the project was envisioned as a major educational hub for the region.
The facility was designed with modern amenities tailored for exam aspirants, including dedicated computer labs, specialised library setups, a separate drinking water station, and accessibility features for differently abled individuals.
Beyond serving as a study centre, the building was intended to host educational classes, support local self-help groups, and facilitate student skill-development programs.
However, local residents and student groups pointed out that bureaucratic delays have left the building shuttered long after construction works were completed.
