X-rays reveal surprisingly long-lived spin waves in copper oxide

Researchers at the Paul Scherrer Institute have used advanced X-ray techniques to observe spin waves in copper oxide. This discovery could lead to more energy-efficient computer components by manipulating electron spins instead of moving electrons.
Why it matters
Developing spin-based electronics could overcome the physical limitations of current silicon-based chips and significantly reduce electricity consumption in data centers.
