Wrong-way motorway driving could be detected by AI
Irish transport officials are considering the implementation of AI technology to detect wrong-way driving on motorways following a fatal crash. The government is also planning to introduce stricter legislation and harsher penalties for deliberate dangerous driving.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other new technology could be used to improve detection of cars driving the wrong way on motorways.
The scope for introducing such technology on Irish roads was discussed at a meeting of senior leaders of the Road Safety Authority (RSA), An Garda Síochána and Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) following the fatal M9 crash this month .
Plans were announced after the meeting for harsher penalties for “aggravated” dangerous driving, including deliberately driving the wrong way down a motorway, under legislation due to be enacted before the end of this year.
Minister of State at the Department of Transport Seán Canney said officials would next week start work on stricter laws for those who “deliberately put other people’s lives at risk”.
