WRD prepares fresh estimates for barrage across Cauvery between Marudhur and Umayalpuram
The Water Resources Department in Tamil Nadu has revised the cost estimate for a proposed barrage across the Cauvery River to ₹1,023.75 crore. The project, which includes a two-lane road, aims to store floodwater and improve groundwater recharge in the Karur and Tiruchi districts.

The Water Resources Department (WRD) has prepared a revised estimate for the proposed barrage across River Cauvery between Marudhur in Karur district and Umayalpuram in Tiruchi district.
The project is now estimated to require an investment of ₹1,023.75 crore. It was originally mooted over 10 years ago, and WRD had announced in its policy note tabled in the Assembly in 2021 that it would be executed at an estimated cost of about ₹750 crore, as per a detailed project report prepared then.
However, in 2023, the government had deferred the project citing financial constraints. Subsequently, the Plan Formulation Division of WRD had said steps were being taken to executed the scheme.
