‘Worse than Jallianwala Bagh,’ says Bengal report on firing on Mamata-led rally in 1993
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has tabled a commission report regarding the 1993 police firing on a Youth Congress rally, labeling the event as worse than the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. The report concludes the firing was unprovoked and unnecessary, with the government now offering compensation and legal support to the victims' families.
Why it matters
The report serves as a significant political tool in West Bengal, highlighting historical grievances against the previous administration and impacting current political narratives.
KOLKATA: “There was no need to fire bullets to control the crowd located far away from Writers’ Buildings,” CM Suvendu Adhikari read out from the Sushanta Chatterjee Commission’s report on the police firing on a Mamata Banerjee-led Youth Congress rally on July 21, 1993, that led to the death of 12 activists (a 13th person is still missing). The report said the “apprehension of an attack on Writers’ Buildings was imaginary” and the firing was “worse than the Jallianwala Bagh massacre”.The commission was set up by the erstwhile Trinamool regime and the report was filed in Dec 2024. It was tabled in the assembly by the CM on Monday, on the eve of the 33rd anniversary of the firing, which will be observed separately by two factions of Trinamool as well as Congress in Kolkata.
