The Labour Party (LP) has urged the Federal Government to declare a national state of emergency in Nigeria’s teaching sector, warning that poor welfare and working conditions for teachers threaten sustainable development. Ken Eluma Asogwa, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, in a statement marking World Teachers’ Day on October 5, 2026, said the sector should be treated as a national priority. “No nation can genuinely grow where those entrusted with moulding the future generations of its citizens are themselves ill-equipped, poorly motivated and inadequately rewarded to perform their duties,” the party said. The LP called for increased investment in teacher training and retraining, improved learning facilities and teaching resources, and better welfare for education workers.
