Egypt are into the last 16 of the World Cup after beating Australia in a dramatic penalty shoot-out in Dallas. <p>The game itself ended 1-1 after extra time but Harry Souttar and Lucas Herrington both missed from the spot in the shootout while Egypt converted four consecutive spot-kicks against Mat Ryan - brought on in the 119th minute - to send Australia packing.</p><p>Although Cristian Volpato's early effort skimmed the crossbar, it was Egypt who were the better team in the first half and Emam Ashour soon nodded them in front. Omar Marmoush should have doubled the advantage at the start of the second period.</p><widget id="8"></widget><p>But Egypt were punished when Australia found an equaliser that came when Mohamed Hany glanced the ball into his own net. Two Australia defenders missed - Souttar and Herrington - to end their hopes as Egypt set up a clash with Argentina or Cape Verde.</p> <widget id="9"></widget><ul><li><strong><a href="https://www.skysports.com/football/australia-vs-egypt/live/549851">As it happened</a> | <a href="https://www.skysports.com/football/australia-vs-egypt/teams/549851">Teams </a>| <a href="https://www.skysports.com/football/australia-vs-egypt/stats/549851">Stats </a>| <a href="https://www.skysports.com/football/news/12098/13556636/world-cup-2026-bracket-and-knockout-fixtures-whos-facing-who-in-the-last-32-and-route-to-final">Knockout bracket</a></strong></li><li><a href="https://www.skysports.com/football/news/12098/13481245/world-cup-2026-fixture-schedule-and-uk-kick-off-times-day-by-day-breakdown-of-all-104-matches-including-england-scotland"><strong>World Cup day-by-day schedule</strong></a><strong> | Latest: </strong><a href="https://www.skysports.com/football/live-blog/11095/13509050/world-cup-2026-news-and-live-updates-usa-canada-and-mexico-build-up-plus-latest-on-trump-tickets-and-fans" target="_blank"><strong>World Cup</strong></a></li><li><strong><a href="https://qrcode.skysports.com/WCfollow" target="_blank">Follow our World Cup coverage in the Sky Sports App</a></strong></li></ul> <widget id="5"></widget><h3><a href="https://www.skysports.com/football/australia-vs-egypt/live/549851">The key moments from Dallas...</a></h3><p>5 - <strong>CROSSBAR!</strong> Volpato took a shot from distance that skimmed the bar.</p><p>13 - <strong>GOAL!</strong> Ashour nodded Egypt ahead when unmarked at the back.</p><p>21 - <strong>WIDE!</strong> Zico fired wide when through but was adjudged offside.</p><p>46 - <strong>WIDE!</strong> Marmoush straight from the restart slotted his shot wide.</p><p>55 - <strong>OWN GOAL!</strong> Australia levelled when the ball glances in off Hany.</p><p>90+4 - <strong>SAVE!</strong> Beach brilliantly pushed Rabia's header over the bar.</p><p><strong>PEN - MISS!</strong> Souttar blazed the opening penalty over the crossbar.</p><p><strong>PEN - MISS!</strong> After five conversions, Herrington hit the bar himself.</p><p><strong>PEN - WINNER!</strong> Abdelmaguid sent Ryan the wrong way to win it.</p><h3>Salah: If anyone was going to Panenka, it was going to be me!</h3><p>Egypt captain <strong>Mohamed Salah</strong> speaking on <em>BBC Sport: </em>"It's history.
