A 58-year-old man, identified as Veluchami, suffered 40% burns when he was handling chemicals in a fireworks unit in Virudhunagar district on Monday.

Police said Ramamurthi of Thayilpatti near Sivakasi owned a fireworks unit. Over 50 workers were present on the premises in different sheds/rooms engaged in manufacturing crackers.

At around 11 a.m., when Mr. Veluchami was carrying some fuse, it suddenly went off and there was fire all around. At least three sheds were destroyed in the accident, according to workers.
