A worker from Uttar Pradesh was charred to death when a fire broke out at a furniture godown in Peddur on the outskirts of Sircilla town in Rajanna Sircilla district on Tuesday morning.

Three other workers who were in the furniture manufacturing unit-cum-godown escaped unhurt. Police suspect short-circuit may have caused the fire. Locals alerted the police after noticing thick smoke billowing from the godown. Police rushed to the spot, and three fire tenders were pressed into service. Firefighters doused the blaze after an operation lasting nearly three hours.
