Woodend bypass: Waimakariri Mayor Dan Gordon pushes for toll

Waimakariri Mayor Dan Gordon is advocating for the Woodend bypass project to proceed without tolling road users. The government has committed $800 million to the project, which aims to reduce congestion and improve safety on State Highway 1.
Why it matters
The debate over tolling versus government funding for critical infrastructure is a major point of contention for local economic growth and community access.
The Waimakariri District Mayor says he’s advocating for a North Canterbury motorway extension to go ahead without tolling, while also seeking “a clear delivery timetable” from the Government for the project.
National today promised $800 million in the next Budget to fund Canterbury’s Belfast to Pegasus Motorway and Woodend Bypass.
The upgrades would extend the Christchurch Northern Motorway around 11km north, from just south of the Waimakariri River to beyond Pegasus and Ravenswood.
Waimakariri District Mayor Dan Gordon said the community had advocated for the Woodend bypass for many years – and they would be pushing for the project to go ahead without tolling road users.
“It remains a critical infrastructure priority to improve safety, reduce congestion, and support North Canterbury’s economic growth,” Gordon said.
“We are pleased to see that progressing this project remains a priority for the Government.”
