Women workers of a garment manufacturing unit at the Madras Export Processing Zone (MEPZ) in Tambaram signed an agreement with the management after more than four months of negotiations over the withdrawal of transport facilities, alleged retrenchment, and unpaid dues.
According to workers and activists involved in the negotiations, the management credited the pending amounts to the workers’ bank accounts on Tuesday, without prejudice to their right to seek legal redress. The development followed a meeting between the workers, Celebrity Fashions Private Limited, and the Labour Department officials.
The workers, however, said the negotiations were difficult as the management allegedly went back on some of its earlier assurances.
