A 23-year-old woman was killed after the two-wheeler she was riding pillion was hit by a lorry near the Ponds flyover on GST Road in Chromepet on Wednesday. Her friend, Sreeja, who drove the motorcycle, sustained minor injuries and is undergoing treatment.
The deceased was identified as Jamuna, a native of Kumbakonam. She had completed her nursing course and had come to Chennai in search of a job. Her friend Sreeja, 24, works at the Saravana Stores textile outlet in Chromepet.
When they were near the Ponds flyover on GST Road, a lorry that was approaching the flyover collided with their motorcycle and dragged it for about 50 feet.
