A 45-year-old woman was arrested by the Arani taluk police in Tiruvannamalai on Thursday for stealing eight sovereigns of gold chain from a 70-year-old commuter travelling in a government bus.

Police said the arrested person was identified as K. Satya, 45, a resident of Chengam town. The victim was S. Padmavathi, 70, a resident of Chennai. Initial inquiry revealed that the Padmavathi was travelling in the government bus from Chennai to Arani. Satya was seated next to her.

Police said that during the trip, both were befriended. Padmavathi gave her handbag containing the gold chain to Satya after believing her assurance to keep it safe during the journey. After some time, Satya handed over the handbag to Padmavathi and got down from the bus at Irumbedu village near Arani.
