A senior official from the city police said Gunaseelan and his wife Alamelu Mangai, 42, were residing in the S.S. Puram area of Purasawalkam. Gunaseelan had undergone heart surgery a few months ago and was currently recuperating at home. On Thursday (September 3), while Gunaseelan was out on a walk near his house, a woman named Sri Rekha of the same locality verbally abused him, accusing him of tipping off the police about the sale of liquor bottles and ganja in their neighbourhood. She then hit him with a stone, and after knocking him down, hit him with her hands.
