William Orbit, Madonna and Blur Producer, Dies at 69
Renowned electronic musician and producer William Orbit, best known for his work on Madonna's 'Ray of Light' and albums by Blur, has died at age 69. Tributes from across the music industry have poured in to honor his legacy as a pioneering producer.

William Orbit, the electronic musician-turned-sought-after producer for the likes of Madonna and Blur, has died. “William passed away at home on 23rd July 2026,” Orbit’s family wrote in a statement posted to his Instagram. “He will be greatly missed by us and by so many whose lives he touched through his music, friendship, and kindness.” A cause of death was not provided. Orbit was 69.
Born William Wainwright in north London in 1956, Orbit dropped out of school when he was 16 and ended up crashing in a squat house. His first band was the ambient electronic trio Torch Song, which he formed alongside Laurie Mayer and Grant Gilbert in 1980. The first Torch Song album—1984’s Wish Thing—got Orbit tapped to compose the soundtrack for Youngblood, the 1986 ice hockey flick starring Patrick Swayze and Rob Lowe.
