Will Russia be allowed at the World Juniors? Mixed messages after court ruling

The Court of Arbitration for Sport has ruled that Russia must be reinstated in international hockey, overturning a ban related to the invasion of Ukraine. The Canadian government has expressed strong opposition, creating uncertainty for upcoming tournaments hosted in Canada.
Why it matters
This ruling creates a significant conflict between international sports governance and the political stances of host nations regarding the ongoing war in Ukraine.
A ruling ordering the International Ice Hockey Federation to reinstate Russia has raised questions about the upcoming world junior men’s hockey championship in Alberta and angered some participating countries.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled Friday that Russia must be allowed back into international hockey.
The move overturned a ban imposed following its invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Following the decision, Canada’s Secretary of Sport Adam van Koeverden said the federal government strongly opposes the court’s decision.
“We take great pride in welcoming the world to compete at the highest level and sharing the hospitality and spirit that define us as Canadians. But with that pride also comes a responsibility to uphold our principles and values,” he said in a statement on Friday afternoon.
Canada’s stance on Russia’s actions has not changed, the minister said.
