Will bring laws against love, land jihad in 6 months, implement UCC like Uttarakhand, Gujarat: Adhikari

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has announced plans to implement a Uniform Civil Code and introduce legislation against 'love jihad' and 'land jihad' within six months. The state government has already formed a committee to draft the UCC, which was a central promise of the BJP's 2026 election campaign.
Why it matters
The implementation of a Uniform Civil Code and specific religious-based legislation in a major Indian state represents a significant shift in regional legal and social policy with national political implications.
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Sunday (October 4, 2026) said his government will bring stringent laws against "love jihad" and "land jihad" in six months, and implement a Uniform Civil Code in the State like Uttarakhand and Gujarat.
Addressing an event in Kolkata to mark the birth centenary of Vishva Hindu Parishad's (VHP) former president Ashok Singhal, he said the BJP government in the State would function in accordance with the Constitution, but would not tolerate attacks on Indian culture, tradition and places of worship.
"This government will not allow any anti-national activity here," he said and urged people to remain united and vigilant against "divisive forces".
