US President Donald Trump has nominated former Central Intelligence Agency official and national security strategist Nicholas ‘Nick’ George Checker to serve as ambassador to Rwanda.
Mr Checker has a good knowledge of the region, having held senior roles at the State Department, including leading the Bureau of African Affairs and serving as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Southern Africa.
Mr Checker currently serves as senior adviser in the Office of the Undersecretary of State for Foreign Assistance, Humanitarian Affairs, and Religious Freedom.
If confirmed by the Senate, he will succeed career diplomat Eric Kneedler, who served in Kigali from October 2023 to January 2026.
In East Africa, the US lacks Senate-confirmed ambassadors in Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Eritrea, Kenya, Somalia, Sudan and Tanzania.
