Someone offers to help you with a difficult task. You immediately say, “No, no, I’ll manage.” A friend compliments you, and you explain why the shirt was not that good looking. A loved one says, “You can always talk to me,” but you change the subject. Someone gives you a thoughtful gift, and instead of enjoying it, you start wondering what you should give them in return. For some people, receiving kindness is surprisingly uncomfortable.They may care deeply about the people around them. They may be the first to offer help, remember birthdays or check on a friend. Yet when someone does the same for them, they feel awkward, guilty or unsure how to respond. This can be confusing, especially when they genuinely want to be loved and supported.Feeling uncomfortable when someone is kind does not automatically mean a person is ungrateful.
