Dar es Salaam. Tanzania is set to inaugurate the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project (JNHPP) on Saturday, marking a new phase in the country’s power sector after a Sh7.45 trillion investment in a 2,115-megawatt project.
With installed capacity of 2,115 megawatts, JNHPP is already making a significant contribution to the national grid. Energy Minister Deogratius Ndejembi said the project accounted for 44.9 percent of all electricity generated and fed into the grid in the year to May 31, 2026.
The project comes as electricity demand is rising. Peak demand reached 2,199.06MW on February 4, 2026, compared with 1,908.15MW a year earlier, according to the 2026/27 Budget.
For Tanzania, the significance of JNHPP goes beyond adding electricity to the grid. Reliable power is central to the country’s plans to expand manufacturing, attract investment and increase economic activity.
