Why Makinde wants 2027 to be ‘APC VS. Nigerians’

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo wants Nigerians to look at the 2027 presidential election and see something bigger than another contest between political parties.He wants them to see the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, on one side and Nigerians on the other.

That was the striking message the governor carried to Katsina last Tuesday, where he declared: “It won’t be APC versus APM, or APM versus ADC, or ADC versus NDC. It will be APC versus Nigerians.”

The choice of words was significant. Makinde is the presidential candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement, APM, yet he is deliberately refusing to make APM the immediate centre of his argument.

Instead, he is trying to make the election a referendum on the party controlling the Federal Government; and on whether Nigerians want to give it another four years.
