Why is the quality of research produced in India under scrutiny?

The integrity of academic research is vital for India's goal of becoming a global leader in science and technology, as current trends threaten the credibility of its academic institutions.
India has become the third-largest publisher of research papers. For a country that is the sixth-largest economy in the world, this seems like a huge achievement. We are also the sixth-largest in terms of patent applications. On the face of it, these are fantastic numbers. However, a closer look reveals the disappointing truth behind it.
What about the quality of our research? On the h-index , India was ranked 18th in 2025. However, citations, which form the basis for the h-index, can be gamed, inflated, and even bought. The same holds for patent applications, where a few universities alone manage to file more patents than all the IITs combined. All these patent applications help improve the numbers but do not translate to much commercial value.
