Who is NC MP Aga Syed Ruhullah set to resign from party, seat?
National Conference MP Aga Syed Ruhullah is set to resign from his party and parliamentary seat following ideological disagreements with leadership. The move comes amid a period of political tension in Jammu and Kashmir.
Why it matters
The resignation of a prominent Shia leader signals potential shifts in the political landscape of Jammu and Kashmir following the revocation of its special status.
Srinagar National Conference (NC) Member of Parliament Aga Syed Ruhullah, who raised a banner of revolt against NC vice president and J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on ideological grounds, is set to resign from the party and step down from the Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency on Tuesday (November 3, 2026). The decision evoked mixed reactions within the party. Mr. Ruhullah, 48, a prominent Shia cleric from Budgam, has risen as an ideological force within the party ever since the Centre revoked J&K’s special status in 2019. “876 days we kept our heads down serving J&K. Tomorrow, November 3, a new journey starts,” reads a post on X. The administration granted permission for the observance of the death anniversary of the father of Mr. Ruhullah at the Behishti Zehra Park, Budgam, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
