Where are the best places for life in the cosmos? A universe in a supercomputer yields the answer

Researchers using supercomputer simulations have identified that the outskirts of the Milky Way galaxy provide an ideal environment for life. The study highlights the importance of 'Goldilocks zones' where conditions are stable enough to support biological evolution.
Why it matters
Understanding the distribution of habitable zones in the universe helps focus the search for extraterrestrial life and informs our understanding of planetary evolution.

Earth seems like a troubled place right now, but at least our cosmic surroundings appear peaceful. But this is not universally true, as explosions, collisions and other dangers lurk in other places and times.
In our new research, published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society , we scoured simulated universes to find the friendliest locations for life.
We discovered something reassuring: the Sun, sitting here in the outskirts of the Milky Way galaxy, is about as good as it gets.
