What smart people are saying about OpenAI's Exponential Time Hypothesis claim
✦AI Summary

OpenAI and Anthropic have both claimed to have refuted the Exponential Time Hypothesis, a long-standing computer science belief regarding the complexity of logic problems. Experts are currently reviewing the claims, noting that if true, it could lead to significantly faster algorithms.

Why it matters

If validated, this breakthrough could fundamentally change the efficiency of computational problem-solving and potentially impact fields ranging from cryptography to AI development.

OpenAI says it solved a famously hard computer problem. Again. Bloomberg/Getty Images OpenAI said its models found that a commonly held computer science hypothesis was wrong. Hours later, Anthropic agreed. Here's how techies and mathematicians in the internet's nerdiest corners are responding. Turns out, OpenAI might be really good at computers. On Monday, the company said it punctured the Exponential Time Hypothesis, or ETH, the nearly 30-year-old belief in the computer science community that some logic problems get overwhelmingly time-consuming as they grow. Hours later, Anthropic released its own research refuting ETH. OpenAI said it had asked a group of outside computer scientists to organize an open review of its claim. The researchers have highlighted that their involvement is not an endorsement.
