Whakatāne rest home failed over wound, pain and nutrition care, HDC finds

A Whakatāne woman says she hopes the findings of a Health and Disability Commissioner (HDC) investigation into the care her late father received at a rest home will help prevent other families experiencing the same ordeal.
The HDC report, to be publicly released next month, found Bupa Mary Shapley Care Home breached the Code of Health and Disability Services Consumers’ Rights in its care of the woman’s father during the final months of his life.
To protect the family’s privacy, neither the woman nor her father can be identified.
Deputy Health and Disability Commissioner Rose Wall found Bupa failed to provide reasonable care and skill in several areas, including nutrition and weight management, wound care, pain management, falls management and end-of-life care.
