Wetland-friendly tree to boost avian habitat in Coimbatore’s Periyakulam under Green Tamil Nadu Mission
The Forest Department has planted 350 Barringtonia acutangula saplings at Coimbatore’s Periyakulam tank to restore avian habitats. This initiative, part of the Green Tamil Nadu Mission, aims to improve biodiversity and provide nesting sites for waterbirds.

The Periyakulam (Ukkadam Big Tank) in Coimbatore, biodiversity of which shrunk over the years due to developmental activities and pollution, is all set to get a fresh lease of life. The Forest Genetics Division of the Forest Department has planted 350 saplings of Barringtonia acutangula , a wetland-friendly tree that supports avian habitat, on an undisturbed section of the tank on a pilot basis under the Green Tamil Nadu Mission.
S. Senbagapriya, Deputy Conservator of Forests, Forest Genetics Division, Coimbatore, said more saplings of the species will be planted at the tank in a phased manner.
In a communication dated July 22, the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC) Commissioner accorded the permission to the Forest Genetics Division, Coimbatore, for the project.
