West Nile leaders call for cross-Bborder immunisation buffer zones

Leaders in Uganda's West Nile region are advocating for cross-border immunization buffer zones to prevent disease outbreaks. They propose vaccinating communities on both sides of the border to ensure comprehensive health coverage.
Why it matters
Coordinated cross-border health initiatives are essential for controlling infectious diseases in regions with high population mobility.
Leaders in West Nile’s border districts are calling on the government, the Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization to establish cross-border immunisation buffer zones, allowing children from neighbouring countries to access vaccines during national campaigns.
They say vaccinating communities on both sides of the border would help prevent diseases from being imported into Uganda and contain potential outbreaks.
Health workers, however, note that this would require additional vaccines and resources for border districts.
