West Bank suspects attack police at Kalandiya junction, attempt to seize weapons

Several Border Police officers were attacked by civilians during a routine checkpoint stop at the Kalandiya junction, Israel Police announced on Tuesday.The officers had been in a vehicle at the junction gate when a civilian vehicle came from the direction of the West Bank and attempted to pass through and enter Israeli territory.When the Border Police officers attempted to approach the vehicle, several suspects emerged and began assaulting the officers, attempting to take their weapons.The police stated that one of the officers had fired in the air in order to attempt to dissuade the attackers, while another had fired at the lower bodies of two of the attackers after seeing an officer being strangled.Later, the police discovered that the two wounded civilians were security guards. Both were lightly wounded and were given medical treatment, initially by the officer who opened fire, before being evacuated for further treatment, police confirmed.Several of the Border Police officers were also lightly wounded.The incident, the police stated, is still under investigation.Israelis rescued after entering Kalkilya looking for motorcycleOn Monday evening, IDF troops and Border Police officers rescued ten Israeli civilians who intentionally entered Kalkilya in Area A of the West Bank.According to a police statement regarding the incident, the Israelis entered the city in an attempt to locate a motorcycle that had been stolen from the settlement of Elad on Sunday.Upon arriving at the scene, the IDF troops and Border Police officers took measures to disperse the crowd and create space between the Israelis and Kalkilya residents before safely removing all ten civilians from the area.Goldie Katz and Ariella Roitman contributed to this report.
