West Asia war LIVE: U.S. military says American and Saudi forces struck sites used by Iran-backed militias in Iraq
U.S. and Saudi military forces conducted joint airstrikes against Iran-backed militias in Iraq following a series of drone attacks. The operation targeted groups linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps that have been threatening regional energy infrastructure and U.S. personnel.
Why it matters
The escalation of military action in Iraq involving U.S. and Saudi forces signals a significant increase in regional tensions and potential for broader conflict in the Middle East.
U.S. and Saudi warplanes carried out strikes on Tuesday (July 28) against Iran-backed militants in Iraq who launched more than two dozen drone attacks in recent days, the U.S. military said.
The strikes targeted “Iran-aligned terrorists that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) directed to attack US forces and Saudi energy infrastructure,” U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a statement.
