Two people have been injured after a serious crash on State Highway 1, north of Auckland.
The highway is blocked in both directions and traffic has halted as motorists try to escape the city for the weekend.
Police said they were alerted to the incident near River Rd, Wellsford about 2pm.
“Both north and southbound lanes are blocked, with diversions in place at State Highway 16 and Woodcocks Road,” police said.
“Motorists are advised to expect delays and avoid the area if possible.
“The Serious Crash Unit has been advised.”
