Week Walking Plan to Build Fitness and Support Weight Loss

A new four-week walking program is presented as an accessible way for individuals of all fitness levels to improve cardiovascular health and support weight loss. Experts emphasize that consistency is more important than intensity, recommending a gradual increase in walking frequency.
Why it matters
Promoting low-impact, consistent physical activity is a key public health strategy for combating sedentary lifestyles and chronic health issues.
Whether you already exercise consistently or haven’t moved your body much in a long time, walking is an ideal activity to boost anyone’s health and fitness.“Walking is one of the most underrated things we can do for our health,” says Juan Tamariz, senior personal training leader at Life Time Middletown–Red Bank in New Jersey, noting that it doesn’t only help people shed pounds but also improves everything from heart health to how well we can move without pain. How much walking do you really need to get the benefits? The American Heart Association recommends 150 minutes of physical activity each week, preferably spread out over several days (this could look like five days of 30-minute walks). If that sounds overwhelming, it’s absolutely okay to start where you are; getting in a 10-minute walk at lunch or while you take a call counts.
