Webster: Kawhi’s return different from first Raptors tenure
Kawhi Leonard has returned to the Toronto Raptors, with general manager Bobby Webster noting that this tenure differs significantly from his 2018 arrival. Unlike the previous 'one-shot' deal, Leonard has signed a contract extension, signaling a long-term commitment to the team's young core.
Why it matters
The move marks a major shift in the Raptors' organizational strategy, moving from a short-term championship push to long-term roster stability.
The reacquisition of Kawhi Leonard brings back memories of the 2018-19 season for the Toronto Raptors and their fans. That déjà vu was on full display Tuesday night when Leonard made his first appearance as a Raptor in more than seven years and scored an effortless 21 points in a blowout win over the New York Knicks. But according to general manager Bobby Webster, there aren’t many similarities between the trade that first brought him to Toronto in 2018 and the deal that went down this past summer to bring him back. “I do think it’s different. I think there’s going to be so many comparisons to 2019 and for obvious reasons. I think for a couple of important reasons, it’s a little different is he signed the extension,” Webster told TSN’s Kate Beirness in a wide-ranging interview posted to TSN.ca Wednesday.
