Weavers block road in Srivilliputtur town over lack of job for three months
Scores of weavers and their family members staged a road roko on Sivakasi Road at Srivilliputtur town on Thursday pressing for their charter of demands.
The weavers had staged a black flag protest against the State Government for not having provided them basic infrastructure for the new varieties of sarees to be distributed during Pongal.
With no order issued ever since the Government mooted changes in the variety of saree, the weavers have been rendered jobless for the last three months.
Even as the Assistant Director of Handlooms, Cheran, came to hold talks with them, the weavers and their family members began to block the Sivakasi Road at around 1 p.m.
The members did not allow any vehicles to pass through from the town towards the district court and the by-pass road.
