Weather: ‘Strong cold front’ sweeps across New Zealand, snow traps vehicles in South Island

Heavy snow and rain have trapped vehicles and disrupted traffic in South Island towns and cities as a “strong cold front” sweeps across Aotearoa.

Today’s heavy rain has triggered flooding on roads in Canterbury and Central Otago.

At the intersection of Christchurch’s Yaldhurst Rd and Curletts Rd, westbound traffic is having to navigate surface flooding in some lanes.

“Roading crews are due to travel to the site to inspect it and install temporary signage where needed,” NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) said.

Flooding has also been reported on State Highway 6 near Gibbston, with crew currently in attendance.

NZTA has asked motorists in flooded areas to slow down and travel with care.

Meanwhile, heavy snowfall left several vehicles stuck on State Highway 8 near Lake Pūkaki.
