A severe thunderstorm warning for Northland has been lifted after intense downpours swept parts of the region this afternoon.

MetService lifted the warning after earlier detecting severe thunderstorms near Kaitāia, Herekino and Broadwood, which were expected to bring very heavy rain and possible flash flooding.

A heavy rain watch remains in force for northern and eastern Northland and Auckland north of Ōrewa, including Great Barrier Island, until 1am tomorrow, covering a 15-hour period of wet weather.

Meteorologist Ashlee Parkes told the Herald a “quite complex system” is moving in from the west.

In Northland and northern Auckland, the heaviest rain was expected from late morning through the afternoon, before easing in the evening.
