Weather forecast: Auckland set for frost and icy roads as temperatures plunge across NZ

Auckland and parts of New Zealand are bracing for a severe cold snap, with temperatures expected to drop to freezing levels. Forecasters have warned residents to prepare for icy roads and frost, particularly in sheltered valleys.
Why it matters
Extreme weather events impact public safety, infrastructure, and agricultural planning, necessitating timely public warnings.
Aucklanders are set for a “notably frosty morning” as a cold southerly outbreak spreads across the country.
MetService forecaster Gerard Bellam said Tāmaki Makaurau and a lot of the North Island will see significantly colder-than-usual temperatures tomorrow and into next week.
“We’ve got this cold southerly flow that’s spreading up over the country,” Bellam told the Herald .
“So once that goes through, we’ll see clear skies and quite cold, dry air. So that heat sort of radiates out from the ground as we go into tomorrow morning. We’re under a ridge of high pressure by then over the North Island, so it can freely escape any warmth from the ground there, allowing that temperature to drop.
“So that’s a good recipe for frost and quite long nights still as we head through the start of the first day of the last month of winter.”
