We’ll be with you, Museveni assures Somali president

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has assured Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of continued military support as the African Union mission in Somalia faces a funding transition. The leaders are coordinating strategies to maintain security gains after the UN logistical support mandate expires in 2026.
Why it matters
The stability of Somalia is critical to the security of the Horn of Africa, and the potential loss of UN funding poses a significant challenge to regional counter-terrorism efforts.
President Yoweri Museveni on Thursday assured Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud that Uganda would continue to support Somalia, despite the growing uncertainty surrounding the future of the African peace mission, which is set to lose United Nations logistical support.
Museveni gave the assurance during bilateral talks at State House, Entebbe, ahead of an Extraordinary Summit of Heads of State from troop-contributing countries to the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), where leaders are seeking a common strategy to keep the mission running after the current UN support framework expires at the end of 2026.
