We have produced some of India’s top intellectuals, thanks to our institutions

A resident reflects on the evolution of Madras (Chennai) from a traditional city into a cosmopolitan hub. The author highlights the city's strong educational and healthcare institutions as key drivers of its success.
Why it matters
It provides a cultural perspective on urban development and the preservation of identity in a rapidly modernizing Indian city.
I am a proud Madrasi and I have lived here all my life. I have seen this city embrace so many things, evolving from a very traditional city into a cosmopolitan one.
I am of that generation that made trips to the Moore Market and Spencer Plaza, saw the first Nilgiris [supermarket] come up, and watched films at the Safire, Blue Diamond, and Emerald theatres.
I have seen the city become prolific in art, music, and literary events.
Madras has never shied away from evolving. We have produced some of the country’s top professionals and intellectuals, thanks to our institutions: I believe our medical and engineering institutions are some of the best in the country.
