A vehicle has been filmed travelling the wrong way along the Christchurch Southern Motorway as traffic approached from the opposite direction.

Video posted to the Christchurch Dash Cams Facebook group shows a silver car travelling along the opposing carriageway in the same direction as the person filming.

The police said they were alerted to the incident at around 8.50am on Sunday.

The motorist who captured the footage wrote they had been travelling from Rolleston towards Christchurch when they encountered the vehicle after passing Prebbleton.

“I came across this vehicle driving on the right-hand side and causing quite a few problems for other drivers,” they wrote in a Facebook post.
