Water released into Kakatiya Main Canal to save standing crops in SRSP ayacut

Authorities have released water from the Sriramsagar Project into the Kakatiya Main Canal to support standing crops. The decision follows concerns over potential water shortages caused by El Nino conditions.
Why it matters
Effective water management is critical for agricultural stability and food security in regions vulnerable to climate-induced rainfall deficits.
Water was released into Kakatiya main canal from the Sriramsagar Project (SRSP) in Nizamabad district on Saturday, in a move likely to bring relief to farmers in the ayacut amid concerns over the impact of El Nino conditions on crop prospects.
According to sources, the discharge into the Kakatiya Main Canal began at 2,000 cusecs on Saturday morning and was subsequently increased to 6,000 cusecs in the evening to meet the irrigation needs of the ayacut above the Lower Manair Dam (LMD).
The release followed representations by Ministers and elected representatives from the erstwhile undivided Karimnagar district to Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and Irrigation Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy, seeking the release of water for the ayacut under the SRSP, sources said.
