Water released from Ganekal reservoir for drinking purposes

Authorities have released water from the Ganekal reservoir in Raichur to address drinking water shortages and support irrigation for local crops. Officials have been instructed to monitor the distribution closely to ensure efficient resource management.
Why it matters
Effective water management is critical for sustaining agricultural livelihoods and public health in drought-prone regions.
Water has been released from the Ganekal reservoir into the downstream areas of Raichur city to prioritise drinking water supply and support standing crops, according to Basanagouda Daddal, Raichur Rural MLA.
Speaking on the development, Mr. Daddal said water is being discharged through canals 99A, 100, 102, and 102A. This strategic release is expected to ease drinking water scarcity for residents while ensuring much-needed irrigation for tail-end farmlands to protect current crops.
The legislator directed officials to exercise strict vigilance to prevent any disruption in the drinking water supply. He also emphasised the importance of optimal water management to facilitate smooth agricultural operations.
