Water release based on CWMA instructions, says Minister Yatindra Siddaramaiah
Karnataka Urban Development Minister Yatindra Siddaramaiah confirmed that the state is releasing water to Tamil Nadu following directives from the Cauvery Water Management Authority. He emphasized that these releases are a legal requirement and are being managed to ensure drinking water security despite low reservoir levels.
Why it matters
The Cauvery water dispute is a long-standing inter-state conflict that impacts agricultural stability and water security for millions in Southern India.
“Karnataka is releasing water to Tamil Nadu, on the directions of the Cauvery Water Management Authority [CWMA],’’ Urban Development Minister Yatindra Siddaramaiah said in Belagavi on Tuesday (June 28, 2026).
He was responding to complaints by some organisations that Karnataka was releasing water to Tamil Nadu despite the low water levels in the dams due to scarce rainfall.
