Although controlled experiments offer promise for improving weather forecasts , progress in real-world applications has been hindered by gaps in high-altitude data and by small but persistent errors in models and satellite measurements.

For the first time, scientists, including a team from the University of Tokyo, have shown that adding data on water isotopes to weather models really works. By feeding satellite measurements of these “molecular fingerprints” of water vapor into forecasting systems, they improved predictions of atmospheric conditions for up to five days, even sharpening forecasts of heavy rainfall across many regions.
