WATCH LIVE: Saeima ceremonial sitting and awards ceremony
Latvia is preparing for a ceremonial sitting of the Saeima to mark the 35th anniversary of the restoration of its de facto independence. The event will include speeches, a flower-laying ceremony at the Freedom Monument, and the presentation of the Statehood Award.
Why it matters
Commemorating national independence is a significant event for Latvian political history and national identity.
The Speaker of the Saeima, Daiga Mieriņa (Greens and Farmers Union/ZZS), and Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs (United List) will deliver speeches at the session. The surviving members of the Supreme Council who voted in favour of restoring independence, the President of Latvia, as well as representatives of the foreign diplomatic corps have been invited to the ceremonial session. Before the ceremonial sitting, the deputies will participate in a flower-laying ceremony at the Freedom Monument. Afterwards, at 14:00, the Speaker of the Saeima will participate in the ceremonial presentation of the Statehood Award, at the Riga Castle.
