A New Zealand man captured video footage of a car skidding off a highway due to black ice near the Wharerātā ranges. He shared the video to warn other motorists about the dangerous road conditions in the area.
Why it matters
The incident highlights the ongoing safety hazards posed by black ice on notorious stretches of road, serving as a public safety warning for drivers.
A Wairoa man has shared a video of the terrifying moment a car hit black ice and skidded off State Highway 2 between Morere and Gisborne.
Ngamaanaki Te Hau, a father of three, was travelling from Wairoa to Ōpōtiki with his family early on Sunday morning.
He had noticed the roads were “a little bit frosty” as he approached the Wharerātā ranges, south of Gisborne.
Te Hau spotted two vehicles that had gone off road, one of which had been “wiped out”.
He pulled over next to the first vehicle to check the passengers were okay, then walked further down to check on the passengers of a second vehicle (the van pictured in the video).
“It was all black ice – and that s***’s pretty deadly”, Te Hau told the Gisborne Herald.
